The second annual Faction Games are now behind us. Overall, I would call it nothing short of a rousing success.
I’m proud of the effort the staff put in. This event would not have been possible without the many folks who came out, sacrificing their Labor Day weekend. They judged, loaded barbells, took pictures, prepared food, tweeted…They cheered as hard as they could.
But most of all, I’m proud of the athletes who competed.
Prior to the start of the first event, I took a moment to personally thank everyone. I know the sacrifices required. It’s not easy to train and prepare for countless hours, forgoing all the simple, routine pleasures of a more casual lifestyle. Also, in these times it’s not easy to make the financial commitment to register and to travel. But these athletes gladly did it anyway. In return, all they asked for was the chance to compete in a well-run, fair show.
I hope that we provided that for you.
I also asked the athletes for proof. No matter your ability, every contest has its dark moments. There are little instances where anxiety, uncertainty, doubt and fear surface, if only briefly. I knew there would be gasps and groans when the events were announced. I knew I would hear the words, “I can’t do this!” I knew I would see some athletes struggle.
…But none of that matters.
I just wanted the athletes to prove it to themselves. I wanted them to know that they had put in the work. That they had friends, loved ones, and co-competitors all around them for support. In the face of that, there would be nothing they could not accomplish.
In the end, these athletes did prove it.
Every competition is the same. It doesn’t really matter too much who wins and who loses. Every athlete is better off for participating. It’s a chance to perform when it matters…when it truly counts.
Here, we learn from our successes and from our mistakes. When we fail, as we all inevitably will from time to time, we are given an opportunity for improvement that we could not have discovered otherwise. The key thing is that we learn from the experiance, train harder and smarter, and come back ready to fight again.
Yes, it’s hard. But in the end, it really is worth it.
